Graduation Reflection Class of 2018

While our  Undergraduate Class of 2018 are preparing for their graduation ceremonies, they have a moment to reflect on their time and experience at Hult. Its been a transformative few years, during which students have learned about the world, developed as leaders, and made lifelong friendships. Although well be sad to say goodbye to this incredibly talented and diverse group of Hultians, we also cant wait to see them apply what theyve learned during their studies and make a real impact in the world. We had the chance to ask one soon-to-be-graduate, Emily Nguyen, about her Hult experience, her thoughts on graduating, and what the next step might be for her. How will you feel when you receive your diploma? Knowing that I will be finishing school soon and joining the workforce makes me more excited than ever. Im thrilled to begin a new chapter of my life in a world thats full of opportunities. The idea of graduation feels amazing and scary at the same time, because I know Ill be taking on more responsibility for myself, and most importantly, for my family. When I feel afraid that I might not meet my own expectations, I combat this by taking a step back and reflecting on everything Ive learned during my three years at Hult. This process helps to remind me what Im good at, what interests me, and what I want to continue doing. From these realizations, I know exactly what type of work suits me best and what to try and look for once I begin my job hunt. Im thrilled to begin a new chapter of my life in a world thats full of opportunities. What will you miss most about the Hult classroom? What I will miss most about Hult is the structure and guidance from our professors. Having the structure of the classroom means we are very clear about what needs to be done and how professors expect our work to be completed for the whole of the semester. The roadmap is set out perfectly and gives us small steps or tasks to complete to arrive at our final destination. However, I know this is not always the case in real life. I need to take what Ive learned at Hult into the working environment, which requires the ability to look at the big picture and create our own â€Å"syllabus.† What will you miss most about San Francisco? I plan to move back to Vietnam within a few months, and there are so many things I will miss about San Francisco. I will miss hiking up Mount Tamalpais and waiting for the sunrise. Ill miss going to Baker beach to watch the sunset at 9PM when the days are long in the summer. I will miss the San Francisco pier where I used to run in the morning, and Dolores Park where I hung out with friends. I will definitely miss Chinatown and the Vietnamese community which is full of beautiful, photograph-worthy hidden spots and amazing restaurants that always offered me comfort food whenever I felt homesick. San Francisco is a great city. It has a lot more to offer than I ever imagined before coming here. San Francisco is a great city. It has a lot more to offer than I ever imagined. How are you going to celebrate graduation? My family will be joining me on my graduation day. I am planning to take them on a road trip to explore California. They will get the chance to see the amazing scenery of Yosemite, experience exciting weekends in Tahoe, enjoy the sunny weather and stunning views in Big Sur, Monterey, Los Angeles, and Palm Springs. These places hold the most beautiful memories of my college life. Visiting them for the last time before moving back to Vietnam will be the most memorable moment to celebrate my graduation. Exploring beautiful places with new friends was one of my best memories as a Hult student. What do you plan on doing next? I am planning to work before studying further. In my case, I know that securing a job and working for a while will help me to discover what I like and what it is that I want to do long-term. Do you have any advice for future Hult students? My advice for future students is to do as many different things as you can during your spare time at Hult. Not only did this help me to understand myself better, but it also helped me to think more about who I want to become. The mistake I made during my college years was that I always waited until I thought I was ready to do something. After awhile, I came to the realization that I was never really ready until I just started doing it. It taught me a lot about how I see people, how people see me, and how conflict can be resolved in a kind and productive way. The best feedback you get, when delivered constructively, is the most critical because it really feeds into how you lead. I’ve completely reversed my leadership style—the result is so much richer and more powerful when you lead from behind and lead with strength. . Studying in tandem with working, whilst challenging, gave me the perfect platform to directly apply learning concepts into my business environment, the competitive landscape, and the real-estate industry as a whole. When I started the program, I was very happy in my corporate role. But my courage and aspirations grew to the point that I took on a whole new direction. Having my career coach, Joanna, as a sounding board allowed me to really be strategic and get to know myself. She coached me thro ugh all the interviews, the research, and the questions. It went in parallel with what I was doing academically and after six months everything just clicked. . I went into the EMBA knowing I had nothing to lose and I’ve come out with everything. Great strength, global friends, amazing learning, mentors from professors, a job I love, and the knowledge that I can set my mind to achieve anything and with the right support and resources I’ll get there.† . I knew that I’d have likely stayed in my neighborhood for years to come if I didn’t take this opportunity. I’d not lived or studied outside of the U.S. before. So I left my job as a global strategist at an advertising agency and moved halfway around the world. I’ve come back a more culturally aware, well-versed person. I’ve realized that everything is a learning experience and an opportunity for growth. Ill definitely carry this mindset with me into the future. Technology and social media allow us to be different people in several places at once. Im excited to see how I can establish myself in whatever city Ill be lucky enough to call home and still maintain deep connections with people all over the world. I’m inspired by my classmates every day. Hearing some of their life stories and how getting this degree fits into their greater mission has been very humbling. My biggest challenge has been finding the ‘right’ path for me. There have been rooms Ive felt like I shouldnt be in, but now Im proud to feel as though I truly belong, wherever I am.† .
